David Koresh ( Vernon Wayne Howell)
David Koresh aka Vernon Wayne Howell was the leader of the Branch Davidians .Branch Davidians was a sect which considered him the last prophet . Koresh was born in Houston, Texas and he was the son of a 14-year-old single mother, Bonnie Sue Clark. His father was a 20-year-old Bobby Howell. The couple never married. Two months before Koresh's birth, her father found another teenager and left Bonnie Sue.
David Koresh came from a dysfunctional family background and he was a member, and later a leader of the Shepherd's Rod, a reform movement led by Victor Houteff that splintered off from the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Koresh joined a spiritual group that was based at the Mount Carmel Center outside Waco, Texas, where the group took the name "Branch Davidians". Here he competed for dominance with another leader named George Roden, until Roden was jailed for murdering another rival.
Vernon Howell legally changed his name to David Koresh on May 15, 1990.The name Koresh is composed of two words David and Koresh. Koresh is the Biblical name of Cyrus the Great. He is considered as a great king by Jews as he freed Jews from Babylonian captivity. David is the name of famous biblical King who built huge religious kingdom for the Jewish people. Actually, David Koresh connected his lineage with the King David as he thought he was the Messiah selected by the God.
Koresh lived a very lonely and disturbing childhood which badly damaged his mental balance. In addition to that his study skills were very poor due to his inability to read well. Since, he was suffering from a disturbing disease named dyslexia. Therefore, his teachers had to put him in special education classes due to this disease. Koresh was later dropped out form his school named Garland High School during his junior year of study .
Koresh led a very terrible and miserable life as his father started an affair with a teenage girl in his young age. Then his father abandoned his mother named Bonnie Sue. Koresh failed to meet his father again in his life. Then his mom began cohabitating with an alcoholic man. Then his mother left him in the care of maternal grandmother named Earline Clark when he was just 4 years old. However, his mother came back to him when he was just 7 years old. At that time his mother was married to a carpenter named Roy Haldeman.
Then Haldeman and Clark had a son together who was named Roger and he was born in 1966. Koresh's personal life took a surprising turn when he joined his mother's church when he was just 22 years old. He also claimed at that time that he is a born again Christian after he joined Southern Baptist Church named Seventh-day Adventist Church. However, he made wrong interpretations of religious biblical texts and tried to marry the daughter of pastor. He told pastor that Isaiah 34:16 of Bible is about him and he must marry the daughter of Pastor to fulfill the prediction of Bible. However, pastor kicked him out of the Church and that action really made Koresh more furious. Later in he was thrown out of the religious congregation due to his persistent pursuit for the daughter of pastor.
Then he shifted to Waco, Texas in 1982. Then he joined the Branch Davidians which was a religious extremist organization based in Texas. This organization was quite different from the original Davidians organization as it was inspired by Benjamin Roden, who died in 1978. Initially, Koresh used to play guitar and sing during church services taking place at Mount Carmel Center. Previously, his band used to play at clubs in Waco. This music was written by David Thibodeau who pursued his own recording company.
It was the year1983, when Koresh decided to claim that he has been bestowed the gift of prophecy by the God. Authors like David Thibodeau claim that he had a serious sexual relationship with the widow of the leader of his sect. This claim was made in his famous book named " A Place Called Waco". Koresh had a had a sexual relationship with Lois Roden who was widow of the abovementioned religious leader and he wanted to father a child from that leader. Since, he believed that God had chosen him to father a child with her. Moreover, he started to spread his own twisted message called "The Serpent's Root. This message created a controversy within the religious group as Lois Roden 's son George Roden wanted to become the leader of the group.
Then Koresh decided to marry Rachel Jones as he claimed that God asked him to do so. After his decision, there was temporary stoppage in the power struggle within his organization. However, this peace was temporary as George Roden kicked Koresh out of the group through the support of majority of his people. Koresh and his 25 followers built a camp at Palestine, Texas which is 140 kilometers from Waco Texas. During next few years he recruited new followers from USA, Israel and Australia. He also traveled to Israel and claimed that he had a vision that he is the modern day Cyrus the great.
Victor Houteff was the founder of the Davidian movement. Victor and he were planning to create a divine kingdom of King David in the Israel. Koresh also claimed that he was guided by God to establish a kingdom like King David in the city of Palestine. Until 1990, he believed that he may die in the Jerusalem. However, after 1990 he believed that he may die in the United States. In addition to that, he also claimed that prophecies of Daniel will be fulfilled by him in Waco and he also believed that Mount Carmel Center will become the center of Davidic kingdom.
Koresh and his followers led a wandering life after they were exiled from their Palestine camp. Koresh and his followers tried to came back to Mount Carmel Center after the death of Lois Roden in 1986. It ws best time to return to Mount Carmel as George Roden was losing support of majority of his supporters. Meanwhile Koresh was gaining support of majority of his followers of Davidian branch. In the late 1987,George Roden tried to show his supremacy through raising dead and that was due his wish to impress his followers. However, Koresh contacted police authorities to file charges for his illegal action of using the corpse for performing miracle. However, police asked proof from Koresh about the offence.
Therefore, Koresh decided to go to Mount Carmel Center to collect proofs of the crime committed by the Roden and his followers. However, Roden was quite clever as he discovered from some source that Koresh is coming with his seven armed followers to Mount Carmel Center. Therefore, a gunfight broke out between armed men of followers of Koresh and Roden. Roden suffered a minor gunshot when he was fighting with followers of Koresh hiding behind a tree. Koresh and his followers were charged with a murder as they opened fire on Goden. However, Koresh insisted that he went there just to collect proofs of criminal disturbance of a corpse by Roden. As a result, Koresh and his followers were released and they were acquitted of the murder case.
Roden killed a person named Wayman Dale Adair in 1989, who claimed that he was a Messiah. Roden killed him because he was threat for his group. Roden was declared mad and then he ws admitted to a psychiatric hospital located at Big Spring, Texas. Koresh claimed the property at Mount Carmel Center by raising money for paying taxes owed by Koden. However, Koden kept in harassing the followers of Koresh and Koresh. Koden used to file legal papers against Koresh and his followers.
Roden continued to harass the Koresh faction by filing legal papers while imprisoned. Roden also left a methamphetamine laboratory and it was used to carry out dangerous and illegal experiment with human bodies. Koresh reported this to the police and he also asked them to remove this laboratory from the premises of Mount Carmel Center. In the 1990, Vernon Howell submitted a petition in California State Superior Court to change his legal name to David Koresh. The Supreme Court granted him permission to change his name on August 28, 1990. This petition was granted by Judge Robert Martinez .
Koresh was also blamed by various people for his involvement in many sexual abuse cases. Koresh denied all accusations of pedophilia and child abuse in interviews public, the media, however, harshly criticized the Davidians and government spokesmen United States relied heavy stories about the personal life of Koresh. However, many sexual abuse cases were not proven against him. David Koresh followed the doctrine of King David. Therefore, he was involved in many cases in which he forcibly married other women. He also married and had illegal affairs with other men's wife. He even married underage girls which lead to many controversies. The name of that underage girl was Michelle Jones who was the younger sister of Koresh's legal wife Rachel Jones. Michelle Jones was just 13 years old when Koresh married her.
Texas child protection launched a thorough investigation in 1992 about the child abuse allegations. However, the authorities failed to bring any kind of evidence against the Koresh as Branch Davidians concealed evidence present against him. The 6 month investigation was fruitless as there was no evidence found against him for child abuse and sexual assault.
The allegations of child abuse are widespread but evidence is less sure. The ex-members of his group claimed that they saw Koresh many times abusing children. In one incident they claim that Koresh was beating his son with stick and his child was crying. These members also claimed that Koresh used to beat other kids with stick.
Finally, the FBI started an investigation related to the child abuse cases reported by eye witnesses. However, FBI found no evidence of any kind of child abuse taking place inside the Mount Carmel Center. However, Attorney General Janet Reno many times found quoting to the media that he has information about babies abused by Koresh and his followers inside the Mount Carmel Center . However, after careful investigations, FBI Director William admitted that the evidence against Koresh is quite weak and ambiguous.
Afterwards, FBI decided to raid his Mount Carmel Center in bid to seize illegal weapons. The siege began on February 28, 1993, when the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) decided to raid Mount Carmel Center. The fierce gun battle started between both parties and resulted in the deaths of 6 branch Davidians and 4 agents. Then the FBI Hostage Rescue Team taken over the command of the federal operation as FBI had decided to solve the matter as soon as possible.
The serving of arrest and search warrants by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) as part of an investigation into illegal possession of firearms and explosives provoked the 1993 raid on the center. Four ATF agents and six Davidians were killed during the initial two-hour firefight, both sides claiming the other side fired first. The subsequent siege by the FBI of almost two months ended when the center caught fire in disputed circumstances. Koresh and 79 others were found dead after the raid.
David Koresh died at the age of just 33 years on April 19,1993 from a gunshot in his head. His death account is still a mystery as there are different accounts about his death. According to the FBI, Steve Schneider, Koresh's right-hand man killed him as he was suspicious of his activities and actions. "probably realized he was dealing with a fraud," shot and killed Koresh and then committed suicide with the same gun.A different account claims that he may killed himself to fulfill a religious prophecy about himself as he wanted to die as soon as possible.
